Call for Proposals – Unlocking Impact: Keys to Successful Partnerships

Call for Proposals
The WNYSLC is looking for interactive sessions that stimulate and advance learning as it relates to service learning and community engagement practices and partnerships. We emphasize the importance of blending the presentation of content with time for active participatory learning. Bring your fresh ideas and approaches! Sessions including workshops, panel discussions and roundtables are only some of the options you might consider.

1.) Present/co-present a workshop, presentation, round-table or panel discussion.
Concurrent sessions are 30 or 60 minutes long and should allow appropriate time for discussion and questions.
Tips: Reviewers will recommend proposals that:

  • Are relevant to the conference theme
  • Contribute to knowledge and practice of service-learning; community based participatory research, student volunteerism, and other forms of engagement;
  • Involve your audience in the session through discussion or activity, and
  • Accommodate the diversity of constituents in the field including community partners and leaders, students, and higher education faculty, staff and administrators.

2.) Display a poster or other visual material.
Presenters will have the opportunity to highlight successful partnerships and projects across a range of engagement topics. (An easel will be provided. Tables, electrical connections and other materials available upon request.)

Guidelines for Submission

Proposal Deadline: September 14, 2018

Possible Topics for Sessions:
Service Learning

  • Best practices for engaging with campuses, faculty, community partners and/or students;
  • Making it work: effectively managing a service-learning relationship to ensure successful results;
  • Outcomes: measuring the impact of service-learning on students (including academic, character and social development), community partner organizations and the community as a whole;
  • Assessing student learning objectives;
  • Community partner development, including working with students from multiple colleges, or supervising K-12 and college students;
  • Ideas and suggestions for valuable and effective campus and on-site orientations and preparation.

Community-based Participatory Research

  • Introduction to CBPR: definitions and benefits;
  • Making it work: finding appropriate research partners in the community, balancing research agendas with community needs;
  • Outcomes: strategies for disseminating results back to the community, community partner role in publishing.

Volunteerism/Community Service

  • Introduction to volunteerism: why do we serve, benefits for students, student groups, the campus community, and the community at large;
  • Making it work: project management strategies for campus staff and administration, supervision of student groups/projects, identification of appropriate community projects;
  • Outcomes: measuring the impact on students (including academic, character and social development), communities, and the institution, leveraging partnerships for growth.

Important Dates
August 31, 2018 – Online conference registration is available
September 14, 2018 – Proposals must be submitted
September 21, 2018 – Proposal acceptance notification

Please Note: All conference presenters will be given a 20% discount on conference registration fees and are responsible for any additional costs, including travel and hotel expenses. Please be sure all co-presenters have this information.
